leaping in the dark...

"Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how. The moment you know how, you begin to die a little. The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark."

-Agnes de Mille

the power of a voice, vol. 1

Damien Rice is one of those artists that no matter what I'm doing when I hear his voice, I just stop.

and listen.

and brood.

I believe in Crash Davis

"Well, I believe in the soul... the cock...the pussy... the small of a woman's back... the hangin' curveball... high fiber... good scotch... that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent overrated crap... I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve, and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.

Goodnight."

Dear Einstein Bros.,

I love your bagels. Mmm, mmm, mmm. Yummy-nummy goodness is the only appropriate description for a toasted, cinnamon-raisin bagel with peanut butter. My mouth waters just thinking about it. Seriously.

However... What is the deal with you NOT offering soy milk for your coffee? It's 2008, for cryin' out loud! Some of us don't do dairy. AT ALL. Whether it be for health or ethical reasons, there are quite a few of us out there.

Can't you cut us dairy-free folks a break, and carry soy milk for a perfect vanilla latte to accompany my perfect cinnamon-raisin-peanut butter bagel??? (I wouldn't mind giving my money to someone other than Starbucks...)

Yours Truly,
a bagel-lovin' vegan

where does one draw the line?

The line between taking a well-deserved break, and getting the job done?

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna tells Arjuna simply, "Do your duty." Basically, stop making excuses, suck it up, and do the job you were put here to do. Sometimes it's not up to us to question, but instead to fulfill. Fulfill, I believe as long as the behavior is resulting in more overall good than harm. More helpful than not... Who cares if I COULD be taking a nap instead? I could be doing a lot of other, less productive things, too!

I could just start making better use of my free time, maybe toward the creative endeavors I so long for...

Well, there you have it. Let's get the job done, and start living.

cinematic therapy

Kill Bill.

What a perfect movie for when you're a little pissed off. Are you ever irritated by someone, or maybe by the whole world? You don't have time for romance. No room here for comedy. Documentary? NOT an option.

Time to watch Beatrix Kiddo kick some ass.

Wanna Save the Planet?

And not JUST on Earth Day? Guess what-Vegetarianism IS Environmentalism.

Did you know:

-Raising animals for food is responsible for more greenhouse gases than the ENTIRE transportation sector?

-To produce one pound of beef takes between 2500 and 5200 gallons of water... so, by giving up just ONE POUND of beef, you could save double the water you'd save by skipping a year's worth of 7-minute showers?

-Adopting a vegetarian diet can shrink your carbon footprint by up to 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide a year? (In comparison, trading a standard car for a hybrid cuts about one ton-according to a 2005 University of Chicago study.)

If you are having a hard time wrapping your brain around giving up animal products, or even just cutting meat out of your diet, try this on for size: Can you not eat meat one day a week? No beef, no chicken, no fish. NO MEAT, just one day. Trust me, it's easier than you think, and the impact can be huge.

Think you can't make a difference? Even one drop of water wets the bucket.

Go Green. Go Veg.

Happy Earth Day.

lost in translation

It has taken me 30 years to figure it out. The challenge is not that we don't listen to each other, it's that we cannot HEAR what the other is saying. We don't speak the same language; women and men.

Only confusion can result. We try to process what they've said, and only complicate things further. The story gets in the way; impossible to decipher what they meant, we let our thoughts dictate...

What I need is a translator. An on-call, language barrier-buster.

Any takers???
